Research Highlights & Projects

This section highlights some of my research experiences, mainly from before my time before graduate school. At UNC Chapel Hill, I continuously worked towards a Carolina Research Scholar Designation. Carolina Research Scholars are recognized for their contributions to UNC’s intellectual and cultural climate with a “Carolina Research Scholar” designation on their transcript. This includes my time with Dr. Martin Styner at his Neuro Image Research and Analysis Laboratory (NIRAL) from 2020-2021, my 2021 summer with UNC’s Office for Undergraduate Research as a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) recipient, and an external internship with Dr. John House and Dr. Alison Motsinger-Reif at the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) from 2021-2022.

I also enjoy exploring topics outside the classroom and working on side projects. My projects can be found below, in addition to my research.

Empowering Singleton Girls; An Anthropological Study on the Unintended Consequences of China's One Child Policy (2022)
Empowering Singleton Girls; An Anthropological Study on the Unintended Consequences of China's One Child Policy (2022)
[Violet Evans]
I created a study with non-biomedical IRB rights that investigates the relationship between being a Chinese woman born under the One Child Policy and satisfaction in both personal life and careers. This was as a 2021 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Recipient under the supervision of Dr. Gang Yue. Specifically, the project included both quantitative and qualitative elements. I recruited 66 female participants and used SAS 9.4 to assess participants’ satisfaction outcomes in both personal life and career aspects; I also performed descriptive and thematic analyses in ATLAS.ti following the verbal interviews.

An Analysis of Boba Yelp Reviews (2023)
[Violet Evans]
My project partner Gloria Su and I utilized Python to scrape 114 rows of data from Yelp to analyze factors contributing to boba shop ratings across Raleigh, NC and New York City, NY. Using R, I found a significance difference in mean ratings and determined 7 important variables explaining why Raleigh boba shops are rated higher than New York City. I published my data and results in a Bookdown and repository on GitHub, which can be accessed by clicking the link above.
Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit (CLS)
Duke-UNC China Leadership Summit (CLS)
[Violet Evans]
As the UNC Director of the 2023 CLS, I organized a team of 15 undergraduate students and spearheaded operations for planning a conference with a budget exceeding $15k. Collaborating with my Duke Co-Director, we achieved a 150% increase in student delegate attendance compared to previous years, with over 300 student applications. Previously, I served as the treasurer for CLS (2021-2022) and was an attendee (2020-2021).
